A view of the city from the not too distant past. A layer of concrete and asphalt isolates Warsaw from the natural environment. Looking at the picture it is hard to imagine that two hundred years ago, on Plac Bankowy, a depression in the ground was filled with a large reservoir of water, surrounded by meadows and forests full of birds hidden in the reeds along the banks. The growing city pried from nature one piece of land after another.
