At the convocation sejm of 1587, the village of Wielka Wola was designated as the location for the successive elections of the kings of the Commonwealth. Of 12 royal elections, 10 took place at the fields of Wielka Wola. Here the last king of Poland, Stanisław August Poniatowski, was elected in 1764.

The electoral fields were marked out in the form of a rectangle and traditionally surrounded by trenches and ditches; the fields were levelled every time after the ending of the sejm.
