In the climate of economic upswing of 1856, the first Warsaw gas works were built at Solec; the installation ran on coal brought by steam ships from England and by railway from Silesia. In the same year, the first gaslights lit the darkness of Warsaw streets. The increasing need for gas led shortly to the construction of a second gas works in today's Wola district (on the photo). In the nooks and crannies of Warsaw, off the beaten track, many unusual things can be found. What a pity that the magnificent architecture of the former gas reservoirs stands unused and exposed to the wear of time.
