This is comparatively recent history. Two hundred years ago, Saska Kępa was an island in the Vistula. Water flowed along an meander, whose course is marked by the green belt of garden plots visible on the photograph. The ponds visible along the former escarpment are elements of the Vistula's old river-bed.
