The Vistula escarpment in the region of Czersk. This escarpment continues all the way to Warsaw. A stronghold was built here in the 11th century, on the very bank of the river. It contained the residence of a prince, and a collegiate church and chapter; courts sat here. A sudden shift in the course of the river in the middle ages led to the decline of the town and contributed indirectly to the emergence of Warsaw.
